OUR STORY

Established in 2018, The MUD HIVE COLLECTIVE is a growing community of people who resonate with the value of a minimalistic lifestyle! It is a platform to bring a diverse group of people together, who want to live closer to nature. It is an ecosystem that allows and nurtures people to openly experiment on their unique ideas, create things with their hands (and feet) and enjoy the process of learning.

With an intention to create a social and ecological impact, and share our expertise in ecological design, educational practices, and sustainable lifestyle, we offer guidance and support to others on the same journey.

THE BEGINNINGS

To change the mindset towards sustainability within our communities, we started off with the establishment of Puvidham in 1992, a centre for learning, organic farming and earthen construction. Everything we do encompasses three pillars: care for land, care for the people and the community.

Nikita, on her journey in learning ecological design came across Puvidham, where she met Meenakshi who had been running Puvidham Learning Centre for 15 years, and immediately felt a deep resonance with the ideas that the community imbibed. Kaya, being born in Puvidham and navigating through the challenges of the dry landscape of Dharmapuri,  identifies sustainability as a lifestyle. Recognizing the need for community-driven spaces, Meenakshi, Nikita and Kaya decided to create a platform for more people to join, share learnings and mutually empower each other towards a sustainable future.

THE GROWING COMMUNITY

Meenakshi Umesh

Applied Psychologist, Educator, Permaculture Consultant, Architect.

A trained architect and permaculturist, her houses have fertilising toilets and grey-water recycling amongst other innovations.

Kaya Umesh

Born and raised in Puvidham, Kaya imbibed a sustainable way of living. Her journey with building began when was barely ten years old, going on to graduate with a masters in architecture from Italy. She innovates with vernacular materials like mud, brick and lime to make modern designs. Her landscapes incorporate indigenous flora and medicinal herbs which enhance biodiversity.
